Session overview
The aim of this session is to help children understand that all our food comes from plants or animals. The main activity ‘Have a go’, involves preparing a fruity chicken wrap, where children will learn that meals can contain foods from plant and animal sources and the importance of getting ready before cooking so food is safe to eat e.g. wash hands, tie hair back, put on an apron.

Listen and respond
Explain to the children that they will be learning about where food comes from. 
Show the children four silhouette images of different animals (lamb, pig, cow, chicken) on the Animal silhouettes sheet.
  • Ask them to name each animal.
  • Ask them to describe what they look like/what noise they make.
  • Ask them to name foods from the different animals. (You can use the Animal silhouettes sheet to help match four foods to their animal origins.)
Question the children about chicken:
  • What chicken dishes/meals they have eaten?
  • What is their favourite chicken dish?
Explain that chicken has to be prepared and cooked before it can be eaten.  Discuss how to get ready to cook, such as washing hands, putting on an apron and tying back long hair.

Explain that different parts of the chicken are generally eaten, such as the breast, wing and drumstick. Show them these parts of a chicken on the Different parts of a chicken sheet.  

Talk about chicken being a type of bird. There are other birds (poultry) that are eaten. Show them images from the Poultry silhouettes sheet and see if they can match the labels to the pictures.

Talk about eating foods from a variety of different plants and animals keeps us healthy. You may wish to explain that some people do not eat meat out of choice, or for religious or cultural reasons.

Have a go
Prepare the Fruity chicken wraps ingredients according to the recipe in advance of the session – ensure that these are refrigerated. If this session is completed just before lunch, the children could eat what they have made for lunch.

Organise the children into groups of four. Make sure they have followed the ‘Getting ready to cook’ cards (see session 1). Give each child a wrap, and then allow them to put some of each of the ready prepared ingredients into the middle of their wrap. Show them how to fold the wrap. Talk to the children about the ingredients. Which do they like, which have they tried before? 

Play the ‘Go shopping game’.  This activity is based around putting together a meal.
This activity is for four children. You will need:
  • 4 x Shopping list cards
  • 12 x Food ingredient cards  - cut out
  • 1 x Go shopping game board
  • Dice and counters 
Give each child a shopping list card, and place the cut out food ingredient cards on the relevant sections of the board.

Children should take it in turns to roll the dice and travel around the board.  When they land on the coloured shapes indicating the vegetable, meat or starchy food section, they can collect a food ingredient card from that section.  If the food is on their shopping list it can be kept, if not the card must be returned.  
The aim is to gather all the items on their shopping list to make their meal.  The first player to do this is the winner.  

At home
Make a copy of the Fruity chicken wraps recipe for children to take home and make with their parent/carer.

Pre 3
Ask them to name some of the animals they might see on a farm. Get them to make the different sounds each animal makes.
  • Get them involved with adding some of the ingredients to the tortilla wraps.
